FDA Approves Production of Generic Hypertension Medication
A generic version of a successful hypertension medication was approved for production and distribution by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., a generic drug maker, received final approval to make a generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s hypertension treatment Accupril. Both treatments are ACE inhibitors, which block enzymes that constrict blood vessels. Inhibiting that chemical allows blood vessels to dialate and blood can flow more freely. Controlling high blood pressure can prevent strokes, heart disease, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
The generic Quinapril HCl tablets are available in doses of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg. The company said shipment of this product will begin soon.
As with all medications, there are side effects. Nausea, diarrhea, cough, increased urination, headache, and sun sensitivity have been associated with taking Quinapril HCl. Women who are preganant should not take this medication. Patients should consult with their doctors before beginning or changing their treatment plan.
