Heart Health Improves with Weight Loss Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular events among obese patients, according to a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
Obese patients are more likely to have multiple cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, or diabetes. When traditional or conservative treatments do not succeed in reducing those risk factors, obese patients can consider gastric bypass surgery as a way to reduce their cardiovascular risk, according to the study’s author.
Researchers identified six studies that analyzed cardiovascular risk after gastric bypass surgery. They then used scientifically established scores to weigh risk factors such as weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels among obese patients.
After evaluating the data, researchers determined that gastric bypass surgery reduced the risk for a future cardiovascular event anywhere from 8 percent to 79 percent. That cut chances of heart attack, heart surgery, or death caused by heart disease from 7 to 3.5 percent over a decade.
